New and Old Books for all Readers and Collectors
Much Ado is an award-winning independent bookshop situated in the Medieval village of Alfriston, East Sussex. From carefully selected new books to a delightful melange of old books to fabulous cards and unique notebooks, we offer a variety of pleasures to distract and entertain book lovers.
And of course we like to buy books, if you have a volume or a library.
We hope you’ll enjoy browsing our website. And we hope you’ll think about a visit: Our shop is much nicer than a computer screen!
Cate Olson and Nash Robbins
Our bookshop is housed in a charming 19th-Century barn, part of a compound that once housed a builder’s yard.
What’s in store for book lovers? A terrific selection of hand-picked books displayed over two floors.
The compound also features a shepherds hut filled with second-hand books, and a Bower of bargain books.
Our compound also encompasses Prospero's Project, which houses our antiquarian books, a bookarts paper trail, a craft room, a writer's haven and more.
A clubhouse for our Readers Club, it offers comfy chairs, recent magazines for browsing, a library of books on printing history to enjoy (but not buy!), and even our Adana 8x5 printing press.
We think of Prospero’s Project as a place for book-lovers to gather, discover, meet and share – a kind of social club for readers, and a gallery for makers. Plus, it supports our Social Enterprise, which shares the same name.
Events and workshops
We love getting people together to enjoy learning new skills, to share thoughts about books or to expand their horizons.
We have an active calendar of workshops and events. Some are held in our first floor craft workshop and meeting room; some are help off-site.
From talks by the likes of Bill Bryson, Jacqueline Wilson and Salley Vickers to workshops by leading creatives, you’ll find opportunities to stretch yourself - and to enjoy the pleasures of books, crafts and good company!
“To a complete bibliophile this bookshop is my idea of heaven. There are so few independent book shops left and this one is my favourites.”
