26 April: Roger Fry, Bloomsbury Visionary
26 April: Roger Fry, Bloomsbury Visionary
Without Roger Fry, the Bloomsbury Group might never have existed, and an hugely important strand of art history might never have developed.
We we’re delighted to celebrate publication of a new biography of the multi-talented artist and visionary, with a special author event on Sunday 26 April.
Fiona McKenzie Johnston, author of ROGER FRY: Bloomsbury and the Invention of Modern Art will discuss Fry’s life and work during an illustrated presentation at The Star Inn, Alfriston.
Often overlooked, Fry led a remarkable career and had a remarkable influence on modern art.
From his curation of one of the most important collections in New York and groundbreaking exhibitions in London to his launch of the Omega Workshops with Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, Fry introduced Post-Impressionism, radicalised interiors and changed the landscape of twentieth- century art. His introduction of Cézanne, Van Gogh and Matisse to a British audience played a significant role in a legacy that still inspires today.
For this pre-publication event we have arranged a small exhibit of privately-owned art by Fry.
Secure a place for £6 (we will not issue tickets, but will keep a guest list).
Copies of Fiona’s book will be available on the afternoon. Published by Triglyph Books, it is a beautifully-designed volume with colour illustrations throughout.
Fiona McKenzie Johnston has an MA in History of Art from the University of St Andrew’s, and has long written on art and interiors for newspapers and magazines including The Telegraph, The Sunday Times, Vogue, AD and House & Garden.
