17 September: Leonard and Virginia Tea

£4.00

Join our third annual Leonard and Virginia Woolf Tea, on Wednesday 17 September, and help us mark a seminal moment in Bloomsbury Group history.

Alfriston doesn’t play a large part in the history of the Bloomsbury Group. But our village does have a walk-on role (so to speak): On September 17, Leonard Woolf and Virginia Stephen walked from Firle to Alfriston and enjoyed tea – without (shocking!) a chaperon.

We are unjustifiably proud of this minor connection to a remarkable power couple, influencers of their time who brokered power, swayed opinion, changed the course of literature, and touched innumerable lives.

To mark the occasion, we like to gather with other Woolf readers and fans for a relaxed teatime chat. Not, mind you, an academic gathering; rather, a chance for casual readers as well as established Woolf fans to exchange thoughts, share their appreciation and generally celebrate the legacy of that walk.

Join us at 3pm at The Star Inn, Alfriston – it seems to us entirely plausible that the couple may have enjoyed their tea there. The Star will have their afternoon menu available for you to order tea, light nibbles if you like, and perhaps something stronger.

The £4 charge includes a special memento we’ll make for participants.

We will keep a guest list - we won’t issue tickets. Space is limited; if you wait until the day we might not have room.
